Changing my BLACK dirt to light colored SAND

by Annette
(Moncks Corner, SC, USA)

Help!

I have CREAM-colored carpets, but BLACK topsoil/dirt in my backyard (60' x 115'). I also have a large dog that carries in buckets of BLACK dirt onto these CREAM-colored carpets. What do you recommend I do to solve this problem (besides giving up the dog)? I'm thinking 3-4" of sand on top of the centipede grass may do the trick. The grass will survive and grow great in the sand with the roots in the topsoil, and my dog's feet shouldn't touch the black dirt at all (i hope).

Thanks for any recommendations you can give me!

Hi, Annette -
I think your idea is certainly worth a try. What about trying the idea in a small area of the yard to see if it is effective and the grass continues to grow?

On the bright side, black dirt generally means great growing soil, so I hope you'll take advantage of it and grow some food for yourselves! See the garden section of this site for more info. :)
