Front Yard Landscaping

by Heather
(San Diego, CA, USA)

Hi! I knew I'd be able to find some help somewhere online! My husband & I live in San Diego, and we're wondering what to do with our disgrace of a front yard; the grass has completely turned into weeds and it's embarrassing & ugly. We are debating whether to put new grass in, or dig out the current lawn & lay down weed paper & rocks. If we do decide to go with the rocks, what is the best weed paper you recommend, and method? Also, is it necessary to hire a professional to do the jobs? Thank you so much for any help you can offer!!!

Hi, Heather -
It sounds like quite a mess! Since I cannot actually see it, I would recommend that you get some advice from a local landscaper or home improvement specialist - ask what they would recommend. If you do decide to cut out the current lawn, a sod cutter will save you from digging it all out by hand. You will have to weigh the cost savings vs the time savings when deciding whether to hire a professional or not.

There are landscapers who can, because of their volume, get materials even more cheaply than you may be able to. And, of course, if you can afford it, then the job won't require any time and mess on your part whatsoever.

In any event, I would recommend a professional grade weed barrier if you opt to put that in yourself. Hope this helps.
