Lawn Substitute

by John O'Hara
(Glasgow)

I am removing my grass lawn and border. It is going to be replaced with paving slabs. The only weight it is taking is people. How much do I dig out, and what amount of gravel and sand do I put down?

Answer from our Professional Landscaper:

Yes, the grass and some dirt need to go! Ideally, you want to have a six inch compacted aggregate base (crusher run) first. Then one inch of bedding sand (play ground sand drains best). Then lay all slabs and contain them with an edging. Then the slabs can be lightly tamped to set them in place. This process will ensure that settling is not an issue in the future.
