Planting a Tree?

I have a small front yard with a mound of mulch where a tree was cut down last year. I want to beautify the mound with a tree or ornamental grass in the center, surrounded by flowers or other plants. The mound is 8'x7'.

Any good ideas for a quick fix?

Answer from our professional landscaper:

Depending on how high the mound is, you will need to rig up the stump grindings and set them aside for mulch. Then fill the area with good top soil to prevent settling. The stump grindings will settle tremendously. This will ensure that the new tree will not fall over. This will also make planting around the tree much easier. Then you can add some liriope for year round coverage and add annual flowers around as well. This should not be very hard with such a small area. The excess mulch can be used in other areas around your landscaping. Thanks and good gardening!
