Pruning Japanese Maple:
The butchering of my Japanese Maple

by Shannon
(Charleston, SC)

The Horror.

The Horror.

The landscapers in my community completely butchered my Japanese Maple taking off the top 2 1/2 feet making it look like a cottonball on a stick. Help! What do I do?

Answer from our professional landscaper:

Well, we call that a lolly pop ! They obviously did not know what they were doing. This will be fine in a few years, but it will have to do some growing first. It is going to need thinning as it grows back. This will allow air to flow through and intensify the growth. It will be just fine in a few years. If you can't wait that long, ask them to replace it with a new one.
