Pruning Japanese Maple

by Jim
(Forest, VA)

Do you prune Japanese Maple Trees? If so, when?

Answer from our Professional Landscaper:

Japanese Maples can and should be trimmed each year. The best time is when they are dormant in the winter, or very early spring! (Like right now in the U.S.)

The main idea is to prune limbs, not shear them. Any time limbs cross over or are too low to the ground they should be pruned. This is a tree and the bottom 18 inches to two feet should be one single bare trunk.

Helpful Japanese Maple Tree Info
by: Anonymous

Thanks for the tip on Japanese Maple trees. Sometimes they get to looking more like a bush than a tree! You've got me inspired, and I got out the shears and clipped off those new shoots of growth on the lower parts of my tree. Thanks again!
